Hello!

I've been trying to find some beginner information on obedience competitions and am not having a lot of luck.

I'm considering becoming involved in obedience competitions with my Dane (that I'm *hoping* I'll finally have next year). As a complete novice to the sport I'm looking for entry level information.

If anyone could recommend a book, website, or anything to get my on the starting path I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

http://www.akc.org has a listing of training clubs in your area, shows in your area and all rules and regulations for AKC competitions.

I would suggest visiting either local trials or clubs. Participants there can direct you to local training schools and events.

I think a local training club is a great place to start. These clubs are run by a local obedience club. You would be able to train with other people with the same interest. They can offer you support and guidance for training and showing in obedience.

I ditto that. Can't say enough about local training clubs and the folks you meet there. I just wish I didn't have to drive as far to get to mine ;) :9

OP, thank you so much for this thread.

I am highly interested in it, once I get my Dane. dance2
I will check out the site, and see what is in my area.

Thanks to all.

Rally obedience is a great way to start too. Many training clubs offer rally classes. You can start with a couple puppy classes then move up to rally.

Thank you so much Ouesi.
I found that only the Raleigh club here does it, but that is literally a sneeze away. They offer a bi-annual class for CGC.

I won't be in time for the spring class, but def. the fall class.
I am in there.

I watched some youtube videos of it, and it was amazing!

iI would deff start with Rally and work up to obedience. Rally is much the same thing, but is A LOT less formal and is easier on newbies and puppies/young dogs.

a great book is "click your way to rally obedience" by Pam Dennison. despite the title, it is a book on rally and not clicker training. She has about a paragraph in the intro on clicking and thats it. the rest is all about rally, the different venues, scoring, wut the signs mean, & how to train them. She also gives lots of tips and pointers. its fairly cheap on amazon and is a great buy!!
