View Full Version : need help giving medicine
I have to give my 4 yr. old dane 2 aspirin and 1 glucosamine chondriotin in the am and pm every day and he's starting to be a pain!
First I was giving him it in cheese, then Ritz crackers and peanut butter, then Ritz crackers with squirty cheese. Now he just turns his head and walks away. I've tried throwing them in his mouth but he won't do it.
Any advice?

Open his mouth and put them in the back of his tongue, close his mouth and hold it shut and rub his throat. Put it in a small ball of hamburger.

Lori,
I give my old girl her medicine the same way Carol advises. But I too give our 1 year old Daphne aspirin and glucosimine/cond. everyday. However, I put them right in her dinner. She scarfs them up right along with the dinner. Have you tried this? I don't know what type of glucosimine/cond. you are giving, but the Cosequin brand makes a meat flavored chewable.
Hope this helps!

For daily meds I break off the tip of a hot dog and push the pills into it. The trick is to have a small piece they won't have to chew and to show them you have another piece in the other hand.
That way you go "look at all this hot dog for you.........here have this one (pills) ok here's another one!"
At least with foodaholics it works well. If the dog is picky I would just do as Carol said and put it down their throat, wouldn't add anything just put the pills.
You can try putting it with their meal but if the dog is picky or hates the medicine they may not eat it, make sure to check the bowl and area for disgards.
When out of hot dog I've also used cheese whiz - just spray it around the pill, no cracker. but hot dog works best.

Thanks! Where do you get the Cosequin? He takes his heartworm medicine with no problem and that's a meat flavored chewable so maybe he'll take that.
I do the same thing with the crackers, I show him the second one really quick and he gobbles it up. I'm going to try both things you said. I'm afraid that the hotdog will get expensive though. He's such a stinker though! He knows what's going on and I can just see him running from me when I pick up the pills.
Thanks for the advice.

We use a little cream cheese or peanut butter with the pill in the middle. Works everytime.

Have you tried using a pill crusher to crush the pills into a powder then mixing with penut butter or cream cheese?

I had tried hot dogs and cheese with daisy, she would just eat the food part and spit out the pill. The vet said to crush the pill with the back of a spoon and add a little tuna fish and water mixed in it. now she loves to take her medicine. I use a small bowl and sit on the floor and have daisy sit next to me and eat it while I hold the bowl.

Lori,
I get the Cosequin at my vets.
Oh my, all this talk of cheese, crackers and hot dogs is making me HUNGRY!! I used to have a dog that would take the pill-disguised-in-mush (p.butter, burger, etc.) eat the stuff around it, and 'spit' the pill out. I will never forget how funny it looked; she would take the snack, turn her back, walk away a few feet, then "Pa-TOOEY" out it came. What a character. She'd also go and hide behind the couch if she had something she wasn't supposed to (pencils were a fav!). All I'd see sticking out was her tail..
Sorry to get your thread off track!

LOL, yup, I've seen that too. Just like a cartoon. Since then, I employ Carol's method of grabbing the snout, opening it, putting the pill in the back, closing the mouth, rubbing their throat and telling him/her that he/she is a good boy/girl. Works with all ten.
Yep. And margarine too...makes the pill slipry.

When ever i have to give a pill I put it in Whipped cream. The kind that you just have to squirt out of a can. I put a blob on my finger, put the pill in, and then another blob on top.I find this works well because they don't find the need to chew it. When I put it in food, they chew it, find the pill and spit it out! Good Luck

I give Blue her Vitamin C and E every morning. I have her sit, open her mouth with one hand and shove the pill down with another. Then I just tell her how great she is and give her a treat. No problem at all. She knows that once I'm done sticking my fingers down her throat she'll get a yummy treat!

At the vet clinics, we always used wet cat food-it has a very strong smell-which helps conceal the pill from even the most suspicious of dogs- and makes a wonderful meatball.
Amos actually reminds me to give him his medicine...If I remember to take mine. He'll hear my pill bottle shaking around and comes into the bathroom all excited (I take synthroid...ugh!) Then he sits down as I get his Vit C. He even lifts his head a bit so I can open his mouth and put them in the back. Then the good part comes...He loves Vit E! That's why he goes through the C so well. He absolutely loves it. I put it in my hand, offer it to him, with my hand flat, and he picks it up and eats it. He used to take all of his pills when I offered then flat in my hand, but when his foot got swollen and infected I had to give him so many antibiotics that he quit taking most of them voluntarily. Annie has to take tagament or she vomits every so often. She is very good at picking all the food off of a pill and spitting the pill out. She's been known to regurgitate a few as well. I have to throw hers in the back of her mouth and watch to make sure she swallows...and listen to hear if she hacks one back up. She's terrible!;)
