Has anyone ever used this? My vet suggested it to take the edge off. I don't want to give it to everyone, just Riley. I think it may help her be more relaxed and not care as much when Whinny walks by her sleeping or bone chewing.
Anyway, I am willing to try it, but would like any opinions, if you all have some.

What's in it, and where do you purchase it?
Michelle (MiHi) had mentioned it in the thread about nail cutting. She said something like it would calm a dog down enough to cut his nails. Maybe you can e-mail her and ask about it.

Yes, I use it at times. After surgery to calm them. You can get it at a health food store. About 4 drops on their tongue and you can also put it in their drinking water. You can't overdose them on it.

Hmm. Maybe I should try it before my next dentist's appointment. (Seriously!)

Tess,
Go to Google.com and type in Rescue remedy. It's 5 flowers. They say you can use if for public speaking all sorts of things to clam you. So, the dentist is not a bad idea, I may have to use it for that too!!

Actually, it is something that has been in use for both humans and animals. Here is a link for it. http://www.bachflower.com/

I have some and I feel it works. I use it if I am feeling especially anxious, or if one of my cats is dealing with stress. I have yet to use it on Emma, she's pretty easygoing. ;-)

I use RR on myself and on Luna during times of serious stress. It works and doesn't taste bad. :+ My mom used it on her hyperacvite lab who had serious seziures, it did wonders to calm him down. I take it with us when we are traveling as one never knows when it may come in handy to calm nervous danes and people alike. Can be used to calm an injured person/animal enroute to the doc.

Has anyone heard of/or used Rescue Remedy (a flower essence remedy developed by Dr. Edward Bach)for their dog's emotional state(s), i.e., stress, anxiety, etc.?
My trainer suggested it for Lilly to help ease her stress.

I haven't personally used it with my dogs, but the owner/instructor at our training center recommends it in some cases when a dog is stressed or wired.
Here's a link with some interesting info about it:

I have used them for new foster dogs that sometimes are stressed out and have had some good results with it. There are a variety of flower essences available for a number of behaviour issues and I do believe they work - at least for the "milder" issues.

I keep a bottle of this on hand at all times, as I never know when we might need it. Many of the fosters are edgy from being uprooted and moved around when they come to the house, and some will bark all night if they aren't comfortable. I'll sometimes add a couple drops of rescue remedy to their food or water to "take the edge off" so they can rest and relax while they adjust to the new setting.
I also have a blind Dane who is terrified of thunderstorms and very self-destructive in her crate when they are going on. If I know it will likely storm that night, I'll add a few drops to her dinner
Basically, it's not an all-out sedative like acepromazine, but rather just a relaxant of sorts like if you were to have a couple glasses of wine before bed. :)
You can order it at Drs. Foster and Smith.

Thank you everyone, for your input. I bought a bottle last night at GNC and put 4 drops in her water . Already I see a difference in her....less timid; tail not tucked under; didn't run to her room right after she ate dinner and then breakfast. AND, SHE KISSED ME THIS MORNING!! When I left for work today, she was playing with a stuffy.

I agree that Rescue Remedy is great stuff. I don't know that I would give it on a daily basis for something like an annoyance or aggression issue that is ongoing all the time though. But Rescue Remedy is great for times of particular stress or anxiety, like cutting nails, visits to the vet or groomer, fireworks, etc. It's great for adults and children as well. It can also help relax you enough to help you fall asleep when that is an issue for whatever reason. It's one of those things that's great to have on hand all the time because you never know when you might need it.

It is really nice stuff. I use it a lot with Toby. At first, I didn't think it worked for him...but what I learned was I have to give him DOUBLE the dose LOL!!! The doubling makes him more mellow...not just sleepy and anxious LOL :) HTH!

Definitely go ahead and get some. Rescue Remedy is a really great supplement. It can be used for adults, children, and pets, and is one of those things that you just should have on hand all the time because you never know when you're going to need it. It's great for times of stress or anxiety, like cutting nails, going to the groomer, visits to the vet, fireworks, etc. It can also be good when there are some sleep issues because it can help you or your pet to relax enough to be able to get a good sleep. It's also very safe and I think it's really difficult to overdose (if you even really can).

my previous dog was a Ridgeback Coonhound mix...anxious about a LOT of thiings.
When ever the gardners would come, she would instantly start trembling despite the fact that she was in the house, with me and had nothing to fear. 4 drops of Rescue Remedy and within minutes she was lying on her bed, calm as could be.

I've used Rescue Remedy for my dogs and for myself for nearly 20yrs now. It's all natural and safe. You don't feel like you've taken anything but will notice you're not so tensed up.
I use it for my guys when we were traveling and for myself before job interviews. lol
Rescue Remedy gets 5 stars, 2 thumbs up, a wink, a nod, and a smile, from me.Thumbup Thumbup ;) :)

I used rescue remedy when we first got Carlie because she was petrified of trucks when we would take walks. She would actually try to bolt on us. She is completely cured of her truck phoebia now, so I do not use it anymore. I do still have it in my car, though. I should take a dose myself to relieve the massive amount of stress I have incurred the last few days. I did not even think about taking it myself, so thanks, everyone.

I have used Rescue Remedy for many years. Rub it on the gum for immediate tramatic experiences or daily to see a calming result over the course of time.
Also, I have a great book, "Bach, Flower Remedies for Dogs" by Martin J Scott & Gael Mariani. It lists all 38 remedies and, from Dr. Bach's notes, what each use is for. It lists what each remedy will help for dogs and people. It also lists scenarios such as "dog mourning death of mate", "focus", "bonding"...etc and will give you combinations that you can mix yourself.

The only thing that makes me concerned about using it is that there is alcohol in it.

does anyone have any experience with some of the "alternatives"? I could have sworn I saw it at petsmart, but here's what I found on their website:
Richard's Organics PetCalm
ComfortTime calmative supplement
and yes, I will go to the health food store and get "the real stuff" . . . but just wondering :)

There is only enough alcohol to prevent bacteria growth.:)
Would Rescue Remedy work on something like separation anxiety?

Would Rescue Remedy work on something like separation anxiety?
It will not fix SA and should not replace methods or meds. It will help the body process their emotional state.
I wish there was a quick fix for SA. I have an "arsenal" of anxiety tools, lol. Dakota was always nervous and now with our new family member, Bumper, he has extreme SA so I keep 2 DAP (dog appeasing pheromone) units plugged in, he wears a DAP collar, rescue remedy on his gums before crating, and if he could hear I would play "Through a Dog's Ear" for him too!
Well, I've ordered some RR and some DAP, so I'm hoping they might help a little.

I myself have been using rescue remedy for years for stressful stuations, i have found it to be a wonderful natural remedy and always have some on hand.. I have given it to my children but was un-aware you could give it to your pets..i am yet to take Zayda out for a walk because she is scared of loud noises.. and bolts.
Sorry to venture into my own world but how much would i give an 8 week old puppy before we venture out?

I used it for the first time a few days ago to cut Dino's nails. He usually fusses and cries to get away. I gave it to him and about 20 minutes I cut his nails with no problem at all and he then took a nap. :)
