In tidying up I came across this exerpt that I copied down into one of my "dane journals" when I first became interested in teh breed & thought it such a nice summary I'd share it. It's in German, so I've done a rough translation. There is another (in English<G>) that I adore about the character of the breed & I'll try to post it too (while my dogs are sleeping in the weak winter sunshine). Look for it under "The Great Dane-Character & Qualities." regards/jpy forgive my typos--as<G> always. Astrid & other native speakers--forgive (or plz correct) my rough (& hurried translation).
FROM "Rassezeichen Der Deutsche Dogge" BERLIN 1880
(Notable Features of the Great Dane Breed)
"Die Deutsche Dogge vereinigt in ihrer Gesamterscheinungs Grosse Kraft & Eleganz wie kaum andere Hunderasse. Sie had nicht das Plumpe und Schwerfuellige des Mastiffs, eben sowenig die zu Schlanke und Leichte ander Windhunderinnerde form, sondern haelt die Mitte zwischen beiden Extremen."
The GREAT DANE in his general appearance demonstrates a size, power & elegance hardly seen in any other breed. He hasn't the bulk and weight of the mastiff breeds, but he doesn't have the light and slender form of other gazehounds; but rather he holds the balance between the two extremes.
That IMO is one of the best, succinct descriptions of the physical character of the Great Dane there is...and look at the date! (See the other historical posting on character for a real tear jerker!) jpy
