Great group.

We got a dane (Jasper) from an off leash area last July (what a place to get a dog eh?), so thought I'd join the group to get whatever tips may be out there. THe previous owner got Jasper at a pet store, kept him for a month, then off loaded him...but what a find for us.

He's a wonderful dog....now that he goes to the bathroom outside.

Question: have any of you used food called Mountain Dog Food? - it comes in different varieties, but the one we use is raw chicken mixed with veggies etc, with a dash of dried seaweed thrown in for minerals. It comes frozen, and includes all the bones and stuff, and is apparently Grade A chicken.

We also feed him raw eggs, yogurt, cod liver oil and offal every week or so. He's about 10 months old, and about 30 inches tall...but his feet are way too big for the rest of him...and completely fill the palm of my hand.

Any thoughts about Mountain Dog Food would be appreciated.

It is a Canadian based Company with a head office located in Alberta, there are also offices in Manitoba and BC. The quality of the food is good, but compared to other BC based companies they are a bit expensive.

I don't have a dane yet but was checking into feeding and the price of the Mountain dog food is cheaper than any kibble I could get here (Saskatchewan). I have cats right now and am trying to switch them over to a raw diet and called around to find out the prices of other commercially made raw diets. Mountain dog food would cost me in the neighborhood of $50 a month for two cats and other diets available around here would cost me over $100 for both cats. I think that it is a pretty good deal. The only other thing I would suggest if you aren't is to feed raw meaty bones because those are good for their teeth.

Hi: Don't really know anything about that food, but wanted to welcome you to DOL. If you go back into the Diet Section, you will find all kinds of different foods available.(pre-packaged raw, kibble, canned, etc.) www.waggintails.com has frozen and freeze-dried foods on their site, that you might want to check out. http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid69/pddde4acc6d0e55ca1a84e3360dacdc01/fbb2e526.jpg

Thanks for the responses.

In terms of cost, I haven't checked out the food in BC since the MDF is so accessible here. But, if we get a frozen tub package of about 50 lbs of frozen chicken with veggies, it costs about $28 Cdn. And around here in the winter, after you separate it out into about 5 lbs bags, there no problem with refreezing it without a freezer - even if we didn't have an extra freezer.

The dogs (we also have a greyhound dalmation X) love it, and the food is gone in less than a minute. So, the bowls are off the floor, and the mess is gone. Kibble is a much more grazing process, and the bowl is always on the floor.

I've checked the food section (as best I could), and no mention of MDF was included.

I suppose that as long as the dog's are full, no ribs are showing, etc., then I shouldn't have any concerns with respect to rate of growth.

Despite feeding Jasper four times a day (total of ~ 3.5 to 4 pounds a day), he's still hungry all the time it seems. He ate our daughter's teddy bear without chewing the other week which resulted in surgery - which is another matter altogether.
