Hello to all. I have a question. I have two Danes one black (8 yrs) and one harlequin (4 yrs). Both were rescued from physically abusive environments and are now enjoying bring completely spoiled. I currently feed them Hills Science Diet and have a problem with my 4 yr old having "boils" constantly on her chin. My older male went through the same thing when he was younger. Also I a need to take them both to the vet on a monthly basis to get their anal glands expressed. I am thinking this is from the food, but don't really know. I am considering Nutro or Nutros brand dog foods. Anyone with similar experiences please let me know what worked for you. Also, anyone that has any experience with the Nutro or Nutros brand how has it been?? Thanks

I fed Nutro for years, but it gave my Bree loose stools. I'm switching to Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul.
Nutro is better than any Science Diet food in my opinion tho..... I hate Science Diet.
Go thru the archives... there is a lot of great info there. There are a lot of links posted for info on dog foods too.
Good luck!

We have recently switched form Royal Canin to Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul. Only because our local petco stopped carring the royal canin ;-) As to the anal glands i dought food would do that.#1 are the boys fixed? Also some boys just have more problems with that than others. As to expressing them thats rather easy to do yourself.Messy and smelly x( But easy your vet can show you how.As to the pimples or boils as you call them. Our Tasha had the same problem and was on antibiotics for a few months to clear it up. Now we use strydex pads to keep her chin clean. So far so good. :o
Used Nutro once briefly; caused loose stools. Have successfully fed Back to Basic, Eagle, and Solid Gold.
For years my first Dane had his anal glands expressed monthly. Then when I moved and got a different vet, he said that letting the glands clear naturally was healthier. With the right food, the stools are firm enough to help express the glands.

I had my GD Porter on Nutro. I also had problems with loose stool, and his coat smelled. Then I switched to Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul adult dog food. I greatly prefer Chicken Soup and so does he, but every Dane is Different.

I fed Nutro lamb and rice to my boxerX and Toby had loose stools, too. Seems to be a pattern...
I had my dane's anal glands expressed once, and did it myself once :9 ew-yuck!
Sometimes, if you introduce a bit of good doggy roughage, the glands will clear out easily on their own. Canine stool is not supposed to particualily soft as it usually is when feeding kibble. The digestive system of a dog is set up to handle hair, bones, skin, meat, feathers, scales, etc. Think of all that is inside and outside a rabbit or a grouse. :9 Those things don't all break down completely and help "scrape" anal glands clean.
I feed my dogs kibble mainly (Diamond 60lb+) but they also get deer leg bones, back bones, neck bones, and the whole leg from the hock and knee down, skin, hooves and all. They like whole fish, chicken wings, backs, and necks, and raw, large, meaty bones and oxtails from the butcher.

Adding another voice to the Nutro/loose stools saga. He was also smelly, but I don't know if that was attributed to his food. He's on Chicken Soup now - it has human grade ingredients, and overall is a good quality kibble.
If you want to do kibble comparisons, try this website:

Also, there was a thread on this board which is one of the best I've read regarding kibble selection. Here's the link:

Hope this helps!
