Hi Everyone!
I have been trying to find a site that could give me some detailed info on each dane color. What Im really after is what would be the best great dane (color seems to be a factor) for a family pet. I would like to get a puppy. Does anyone know where I can find a listing of the breeds colors, and the characteristics that go along with that color, male and female? Am I just talking crazy? I am just learning about Danes, but I've met quite a few and just love them. If anyone can help I would really appreciate it.
Thanks for your responses!

Emily,
While I am in no way shape or form a Dane expert, I feel confident telling you that color doesn't matter for a pet. It's the breeding. My best suggestion would be to read anything by Jill Swedlow. Check out Amazon for a list of titles and and breif book descriptions. I would also suggest to find a good breeder in your area and talk with them.

When it comes to having a loving pet the color of Great Dane really shouldn't matter.
Temperament & health should be top of this list.

Sometimes people have perceptions about temperament and color, especially with large dogs.
My first Dane was a black and many people were afraid of him based on his color only, thinking big, mean black dog -- Dobies only bigger, maybe? Of course color has nothing to do with temperament, but people you meet in the park, for instance, aren't aware of that.
When looking for my second Dane, I deliberately sought a fawn, thinking the color would be more "value neutral". Had to compromise with a brindle to get the line I wanted, but that color has been no problem, either.

Definately, color has NO bearing on personality, other than the traits that go along with different lines that people breed. If you want a loving and gentle dog, the best bet is to do your homework, and buy from a reputable breeder.

The color really dosnt matter to me, but I was not sure if there was a difference in temperment with the diffferent colors. And if the color does matter to someone (like my b/f - and thats the only way I can get a dane) Its not really nice to say that it shouldnt matter. To some it may. Do not judge unless you to desire to be judged.
Thanks you for the reply.

No offense here.
What I was saying was that the color doesn't make the dog
who they are.
Personality/temperament isn't based on color.
I know people often have preferences for certain colors.
I'm there too.

So the only way your boyfriend will "allow" you to get a Dane, is if you choose the color he likes? Sounds like you ought to be shopping for a new boyfriend instead. The truth is, it doesn't matter, and I don't care if you think it's nice or not. Did he choose you for your hair color? Your eyes? I personally wouldn't be able to tolerate such a shallow man in my life, but then that is just me: "Ms. Nice"
