Hi everyone! I just adopted a 4 year old blue dane, and he is an absolute sweetheart. I did alot of research (with the help of this web site) before I adopted him and I learned alot about the breed.

My question to everyone is how do I fatten up my new baby without putting him at risk of Bloat? He is about 20 lbs. underweight. Other than his weight problem he is healthy. The person I adopted him from suggested feeding him 3 times a day and giving him a combo of Nutro Adult Big Dog formula and a 1/2 can of wet food each feeding. Is there anything I can add that would help with his weight gain?

Your help is greatly appreciated!:)

I'd post this in the Diet forum too hon.... There are a lot of people who can help you out here with his diet.

I had bought Bree Nutro Puppy for Large Breeds, and found out thru here that she shouldn't be on Large Breed food at all! I switched to Nutro Adult, and it gave her loose stool, so switched to Eagle Pack, and same problem. We now are feeding Chicken Soup and it's been great!

Here's one of the links the people here gave me, and it's helped me a lot too:

Please look into the diet archieves for satin balls or magic meatloaf. I rescued Ari a year ago, and he was about 30 pounds underweight. the great folks on this board recommended using satin balls as a supplement. I agree that feeding him three meals for a while will help. I also add a bit of water to the kibble and canned mixture. Adding a scoop or two of yogurt (regular, with cultures) can help his tummy, and a meal or two with some cottage cheese helps add weight, and I found encouraged Ari to eat by changing his diet once in a while. Good Luck. andi

nutro is a really good brand of dog food. the only i don't feed it to mine is because it gets to be pretty expensive. when we first got my dog he was underweight too, by about 30-40 lbs. my dane is right now on 3 meals a day. he gets one around 8-9am, then 2-3pm, & 8-9pm. i find it easier, my dog is such a stubborn eater, he won't eat a lot of food at one time, so i have to spread the food out throughout the day to mkae the meals smaller. & it's been working really well. we also add plain yogurt, cottage cheese, milk, rice, bread, & wet food to give it more flavor, but don't ever add the same thing 2 days in a row, cuz they will get bored with it & not eat. well, i hope this works. congrats w/your blue dane! i show a blue dane in jrs. ttyl!

What is Chicken Soup? Where can I get it?

I am stuck in Germany so I am oblivious to things like this....

Hello Kari in Germany! I lived in Holland for a year and there is a very good dog food in Europe called Bullseye. If you have trouble finding it you can contact Christel Gaillard at http://www.vanhuishalfweg.nl

Thanks to everyone for all of your suggestions. I have found the best way to get him to eat more is to encourage him and stay by him while he is eating. I know this may sound silly, but it has worked! As soon as I get my film developed I will post some pics of my "little man".

I am just amazed at what a wonderful dog he is. He is so gentle with my 11 month old daughter, and she completely adores him!

Thanks again to everyone. :)

Hello,

Bloat worries me a lot also :( , what I try always to do is to keep Bumper calm after he eats because I donīt know why heīs always willing to jump and run when he finished his food...
My vet suggested me to give him a bone with a little of meat after his food to keep him concentrated in something else than sports...

Good Luck

PS: Reading some post I realize that many of you adopted grown up dogs and sometimes with health issues. That makes me feel very proud of you!:o
