Hi all,
Iīve just found this site and register inmediatly!
I live with my wife and my dog, a 1 year old(born dec 22 2002)Great "I destroy everything" Dane called Bumper.
He is gold haired with black mouth, in Argentina those danes are called "bayos" I donīt know the english name.
This is the second dane in the family, the first one was Astro, a black one which we still miss every day who died of bloat last February at the age of 7. We suffered a lot but we are happy thinking we gave him the best life we could and we remember him smiling although some tears are appearing now in my eyes...
Well let`s not be so blue!
The fact is that because of the way astro died, we get frightened at any strange breathing or movement that Bumper does...
Our vet suggested us to sirurgicaly "stick" his stomack to his "inside skin" to avoid it from rolling aside.
Perhaps you chat about this hundreds of times, would you be so kind to advice us is this surgery works, if it is dangerous for my puppy or any other thing you consider we must know?
This are two Christmas pics:

By the way, how can I stop him from keep destroying my home?
He attacked the washing machine door, my pick up door handle, carpets, shoes, all my living chairs, table, bar, reflex camera and so on...
Thanks in advance for your help and patience with my english and tell me if you think I should post my doubts in another category.
Feliz 2004 Amigos!!!

Hi and Welcome to DOL. Bumper looks like a real sweet boy. In America he would be called Fawn Colored. We have a Harlequin now named Jesse, but lost our Black girl to sudden heart failure last year and we still miss her alot also. As for the tacking of the stomach there is a lot of discussion of pros and cons in the archives. A dog can still bloat, but the stomach will not twist, giving more time to get to a vet.

Welcome! Your boy is beautiful!
I am debating on the stomach tacking myself with my little girl. Doing research. She's only 18 weeks tho, so I have plenty of time to decide.
I've been lucky that Bree isn't destrictive (well, not too bad anyway). She has about 100 toys scattered around, and other dogs to play with. I'm sure that helps keep her from eating my furniture.
Bree starts puppy kindegarten in a few weeks. Has your boy gone thru obedience training? That might help. Also making sure he has plenty of exercise! When Bree gets into mischief, I go play catch with her outside. Then when she comes back in, she is a lot calmer and will quietly play with her toys or nap.
Good luck! Would love to see more pics of your boy.

In the US most people "crate train" their dogs so they cannot get into trouble when you are not home. I don't think it is vry common in foreign countries though.
Linda is right about the surgery. It will prevent the stomach from twisting...but will not prevent bloat. You have a better chance of getting to the vet in an emergency and your dog will live.
Good Luck! Your English is GREAT!

Greetings!! Your english is lovely. Your Fawn boy is beautiful! You might check on the Health archieves and look at stomach tacking. There have been several owners who have had this done when they spay or neuter their dogs. Welcome, and good luck. andi

Welcome and Bumper is beautiful! You can try putting lemon juice or something else hot or tart on things you don't want him to chew...also check the training and behaviour boards...

Of course you have to be careful with putting oils or sprays on the furniture. I know of dogs who think that bitter apple or hot pepper sauce tastes great!
Welcome to the site. You will learn so much here. And I agree, your English is very good, although we are not too picky about grammar and spelling here, thank goodness!

Hi!
Thanks for your welcome and compliments for Bumper and my english, that encouraged me to post next messages without reading them several times :)
I understood that you use to leave yours pets in a reserved part of your house (crate) when they are alone, It`s no possible for me for two reasons, Bumper is responsible for the security -laughs are not allowed- of the house and I will feel awful leaving him in a small area..
When we were looking for houses we where more interested in having a nice garden for Astro, our fist Dane than searching a comfortable one for us..
In order to stop Bumper from destroying the house I begin to run with him for about 30 minutes and that left me with my lungs outside and him a bit more relaxed. Hope this works.
Today I make a mistake, trying to take and insect that sucks blood away from him (not a flea, a bigger one), I touch it with a cloth soaked in gasoline and Bumperīs skin get irritated there and he looks like he was suffering so we clean him with mild soap and water till he was fine. Sorry Bump!
Well, Iīll keep looking aroud the site, still have a lot of post and pictures to see, all are beatiful! Looks like my efficiency at work will be reduced a bit in 2004 :D
Thanks again!
Warm regards

Did Bumper have a tick? They are nasty little insects.
Your English is fine. I live in SW Arizona, right on the Mexico border, so I feel right at home with your English! (No offense intended...just that I am use to limited English skills with most everyone in my town.)
Give Bumper a hug for me. Can't wait to see pictures!
Happy New Year!

Sounds like he had a tick. I have them on my cats occasionally. I just grab it and pull it out. Then wash my hands. Works fairly easily actually if bugs don't make you sick...
They have a tool in the US you can buy that helps you to pull a tick off if the idea of just pulling it out with your fingers makes you uncomfortable.
