Hello , I am new here and I just bought a black dane pup for Christmas and I had to travel about 6 hrs to get him ...But I hadnt seen any pics of him before I bought him cuz they kept getting lost in the mail but I went ahead and got him cuz I really wanted one...The lady said that the mother was merle and about 29" at the shoulder which is really small but the dad was over 36" at the shoulder and black. Anyways ...I was expecting the pup to weigh at least 15 pounds ...He just turned 9 weeks yesterday and he is real small weighing at like 10 pounds, and the lady I got him from said at 6 weeks they all weighed between 9 and 10 pounds ...but he hasnt gained any weight ...is that normal or is he just really small ...I was hoping he would be bigger then the mom but I aint sure now ...This is my first dane and dont know how they grow or anything but everyone I've seen his age are huge already , Help someone please give me some kind of information ...thanks

Take a stool sample to the Vet and check for worms and coccidia. It's not normal for a pup to not gain any weight each week. Having one of the above would keep it from gaining.

My Harley is 9 weeks on Tuesday he weighs 23 lbs and is 15" at the shoulders. Your pup should be gaining some weight. What do you feed him?:)

I'd check out the diet section... .There are a lot of MUCH better quality foods than Pedigree.

Bree is 18 weeks, and I've switched her over to Chicken Soup. She's doing great on it! I learned about this from the Diet section.

Here's another great resource:

Good luck with your new baby!!

Not that I've ever owned a dane before Chase (who actually owns me) but I would have to say that sometimes the small ones turn out to be bigger than you think(if not in size, then definitely in heart). Anyways, have you ever heard of a small great dane? One more note...be careful of the breeder you got him from because if the mother is a merle, that is a no, no...I found out in the beginning too...doesn't mean you can't love your pup, I just don't think this person has any right to breed til they know more about the breed. Sorry to offend anyone...just trying to get the message across about how important it is to know before you breed for the wrong reasons. I'm sure he's handsome so post some pics when you can! Crossing my fingers for you...but try not to rush things...the little guy will grow up to be a big guy sooner than you think!

Our little Luna only weighed 10 pounds when we got her at 8 weeks of age. She has slowly managed to catch up to what the chart says she should weigh. It's amazing what a trip to the vet for wormer (she had worms) and a good diet will do. Throw in a little TLC and you have a very happy pup! I think she will always be a "Dainty Dane" but will be right around the same height as our 3 year old. (she's 33")
