Do dane puppies have rear dew claws when they are born? Or just front ones?

It can happen but I've never had a litter with them.

Floyd the oddball has one rear non-articulating dew claw.
It will be coming off in a triple whammy with his "huevos" and gastropexy. :)

Dewclaws on the rear legs are called wolfclaws.
I have no idea why they are called that tho.

Thanks, the reason I was asking is I was at a dog rescue thing where there were several different rescue groups there including a dane rescue with a litter of puppies, mostly blacks with a few merles, they looked to me like they might be lab/great dane mixes (with more lab then dane), for one thing they were small for their age, thier hair was thicker then a danes, and they all had rear dew claws. I was petting them and I asked the lady from the rescue what they were mixed with, she seemed very insulted that I would even ask and told me they were full dane. Anyway, I was just wondering if it was common for danes to have rear dew claws.

God, why would a rescue person be insulted at that?

I have never seen a lab with wolf claws either. I suppose it could happen. The only dog I know that has them and is supposed to is a great pyranese(sp) they have a double claw. Not to say there arent more dogs that have them just those are the only ones I cant think of right now.

I don't think labs have them either, I have seen several dogs with them, I remember seeing a rott with them, and I know my friends poodle mix had them, I have seen several at the pound with them.

I once rescued three bluetick mix puppies with some odd looking toes, one of them had the double dew claws, another one had an extra toe on each hind foot and a single dew claw on one foot, and the third one didn't have any dew claws, but she had two extra toes on each hind foot. They were very strange looking, I wish I had taken pics.
