I'm helping a geneticist out with some work on coat color and can get some Danes tested for free for those who are willing to enroll their dogs in this initial data gathering program. It's easy and can be completely confidential. All it entails is taking cheek swabs like with AKC DNA. Below my sign. block are desired pairs. If you have any of them & would like to participate just email or call me & I'll set it up. This is a pilot program that could lead to being able to test Danes for all assorted colors and patterns they carry, so it's to
the breed's benefit to get dogs to participate. (And if we don't, then the interest may well shift to a breed who WILL offer up dogs and we'll have missed this chance.) Email <chromadane@juno.com> if you need info and/or want to help. Best regards, JP Yousha

Note also there is a test for "chocolate" in Danes now as well as a test for the masking gene. See:http://www.healthgene.com/color/greatdane.asp
for more info. IF we can work together as a breed on such projects we can develop a whole set of such tests!

I am still looking for folks who are willing to participate in this program to benefit the breed. I'd love some Fawn/Black litters & ASAP if possible to get them included in a study quite soon to be a published paper. So please contact me if you can help. TIA.

IF/when we can identify all the color genes in the breed, any dog can be tested for them & then bred with complete knowledge of what recessives they are carrying (& in the case of spotted dogs, what spotting gene combos are in their genotype). This would be a giant step forward in accurate & complete information, and would mean also that color could be "coded" thru the DNA testing, matched & identified, then on to more fundamental trait considerations, knowing exactly what genotype goes with the phenotype standing in front of you. So please participate & help us help the knowledge of the breed progress. thX

Hey.....my harl boy is currently courting a black female (mismarked mantle actually) and they will be expecting in a couple of months. If you'd like I could send ya the stuff or whatever you need.
