First time dane owner here. Wonka, my harlequin male, is just over 11 weeks old. His official name is Willy Wonka and the Poop Factory, but he won't budge for Willy, or Wonka. :-)

He's a great boy, and is learning housebreaking fairly quickly - his "breeder" just left him in his crate to do his business. He's mild mannered and pretty quiet, but loves his big sister Luna (a shepherd mix) who loves to play and mother him.

My GF and I have already started some training exercises (she's hitler when it comes to dog training), but when should we make it official?

Welcome! My girls didn't start official training classes 'til they were four months old. Had to have vaccinations up to date, which is certainly smart. It's never to early to start your training at home.

I was curious about that as well...seeing as I have one about the same age...mine, Oberon, just turned 9 weeks. I've started potty and crate training, and he's slowly grasping sit.

That's about as far as we've gotten though.

Welcome! I taught Bree the basics.... potty training, sit, down right away when I got her (at 8 weeks). We just started official obedience training at school 2 weeks ago. They require dogs to be at least 4 months and have all shots. They advise us no more than 15 min. of training a day at this age. (She'll be 5 months old on the 24th.) She's very smart and catches on so quickly, but does start losing attention if we try to push her too much. (Aka walk around the block taking more than 20-minutes.)

Thanks for the warm welcome. Wonka is such a joy. I've never been so gaga over an animal before, but I'm completely hooked on this guy.

This sight is as addictive as our danes!

We got Luna at 8 weeks and started crate & potty training but by the time she was 10 weeks she would sit and "wait" for her food and sit and "wait" to get out of her crate. she is 4 months now and is learning to heel and sit when we stop.... it is all a game to her! Sh knows sit, stays, down, releases toys and our chihuahua when we say "drop it" knows what leave it means and rings a brass bell to go potty. The most important thing we taught her was COME! She is a very fast learner and very obedient for her age! The classes we have around here won't let her in until she has all her shots including rabies. Since she won't be getting the rabies vaccine for another 2 1/2 months or so we decided to get a heads up on the obedience. She had her very first pet therapy session on Monday. The helmets and wheelchairs scared her a little bit but she enjoyed being out and meeting people.
I don't think it's ever too young to start a puppy as long as they don't know it's work and learning but think it's a fun game that involves lots of attention and TREATS!:9
