I am new here and am looking for some advice which I will also post in the appropriate forum. I tried to go into the chat room but my computer kept on clicking and I was never able to get anyone's message back to me...assuming, that is, they even got mine to them! Anyway, if you have any suggestions on what I must be doing wrong, please feel free to give them to me cause I'm really computer illiterate! My name is Teresa and I have a 3 yr. old female fawn Dane named Bella, a 1 yr. old male Shi-Tzu named Snickerdoodle, and the newest addition, a 3 yr. old male blue merle Dane named Smokey. We (me, my husband, and 18 yr. old son) got him from some people who were just giving him away to anyone who would take him because they were moving! He spent the majority of his time in a large pen in the farthest area of their backyard. He is doing fine with the housebreaking and house manners, though sometimes he is destructive when we leave him. We have had him for about a month now...and now this leads me to why I got on the internet for information in the first place! It is so great that I have found this wonderful site! Smokey has a clean bill of health from the vet, but he is not gaining the weight that he should. He was undernourished when we got him and still does not eat near the amount of food that Bella eats. He is 2 inches taller than her and 5 to 10 pounds lighter than she is! As I said before, I am going to post in the diet forum and ask for the recipe for Satin Balls and Magic Meatloaf. He seems to prefer eating his dog food dry and I am also going to try him on a different brand. Maybe he just doesn't like what I give to the other dogs. Bella and Snickers both get a mixture of Gravy Train dog food and table scraps. I know that dog food is not the best but it is what they like and what I can afford right now. Anyway, I am getting worried about him...he does not look healthy at all! The vet said to try the food route and if that doesn't work, he'll do more tests. But, in the meantime, I do appreciate any bits of information and advice any of you can give me! Thank you in advance!

Hi and welcome to DOL.

I suggest that you do a search in the "Diet" forum. You will get a wealth of info there.

Welcome!

I'd recommend skipping the Satin Balls and Magic Meatloaf, and just use a higher quality food. Slower, steady weight gain with an adequate diet is better for a dog who had been malnorished. Good luck with your new addition.

teresa-
hi! welcome to the forum. its nice to meet you. where are you from? my name is anita, & i am a 17 y/o girl in southern california w/my family. i show my 15 m/o fawn male puppy, named andy. well, i have that same problem w/my dog...its not as serious as your sistuation but what we do could easily work for you too. my dog get fed 3 times a day morning, afternoon & evening, 4 cups of pedigree dry adult dog food each meal. he also get a cup worth of pedigree wet food & we mix it into his dry food. my dog is quite pick & won't eat his dry food by itslef. so we have to mix things in it. either canned wetfood, milk, yogurt, macharoni & cheese, scrambled eggs. we rotate those items so he doesn't get tired of any of the "toppings". i hope that helps.
