What does this really mean, Futurity Nominated? I read the GDCA article on it and think I understand but if anyone can shed more light on it I would love it. Thanks in advance!
P.S. JPY and LizK you give some GREAT advice to people! Keep up the good work. I can tell you both really love and want to help the breed.(Not to leave any of the wonderful others that also help!!!) I as a new Dane owner want to thank all of you guys that have been involved with Danes a while and share so much great info!!!

LAST EDITED ON Jan-18-01 AT 07:37AM (PST)[p]In the USA/AKC/GDCA, "Futurity nominated" means a puppy or junior dane (at least 3 mo. & under 18 mo.) who is entered to show in our once a year National Specialty show. The futurity is intended to be a breeders' showcase, where young dogs "of the future" do not have to compete against adults. It's a prestigious even that takes up an entire day at our "national." To be able to futurity nominate, a breeder has to belong to the national club or one of it's local/regional affiliates. Nancy Lerch (of Tx & the "TX-Connection") coordinates our Futurity currently. The b*tch must be initially nominated when she is pregnant (suggesting you think the litter is special), then each pup is nominated & confirmed (so the breeder & ultimately often the owner pays a few fees along the way to get the pups there). Of course, ultimately there is little point if the pups actually don't show up &<G> show. Cynically, all it takes is a breeder who is a club member & has the cash to nominate his/her litter. Generally the notion is the pups in question are from a superior breeding, as so many believe so much in them when they are so young (& will put their money where their mouth is). It is, BTW, a totally fun show day & the puppies are too totally cute. It's a favorite event (the Futurity)for many of us. Hope that helps lay out the landscape, so to speak. Dunno what they do in Canada. In Europe & "european" (e.g. FCI, IABCA) type shows, the babies always have their own show seperate in a way, & since (unlike here) they cannot (always) win prizes that count toward their championship, they can win other things that recognize they are promising babies. regards, jpy PS Tks 4 Ur kind words!
