Stainless steel - definitely! My vet said to stay away from plastic bowls.

Stainless steel - much easier to clean and keep bacteria out! Only problem I have at times is that they scoot more than plastic bowls ... those that are fed from bowls on the ground at least.

Definately Stainless Steel Bowls. Not only are they more sanitary than plastic, they are not as harsh on the dog. a lot of times the plastic will irritate the dogs skin around the mouth causing rashes or pimples.

I use a thin stainless steel bowl (Almost like a linner) that drops into the raised plastic feeders. Very easy clean up and it doesn't slide around :)

Well, this is interesting. I've always liked Stainless Steel, but we purchased a plastic one (because of the rubber feet) & it fits atop her Rubbermaid food container. She has an irritated chin at times and now you have got me wondering if this could be the cause! I'm going to switch to Stainless Steel now for that very reason. I'll be just thrilled if it clears up her tender chin! Thanks for that tip. I'm startled by that.

BIGDOG..
I had read and agreed that Stainless was the way to go. Ebony is 4+ months now and seems to do fine. I know people who have a Lab and they use plastic. The dog plays with her dish, which i dont agree with (in my opinion). Food bowl is for feeding, not play. I bought the raised 2-sided dog feeder at PetSmart. Does real good. The bowls stay in place and can be removed to clean/fill. Raising it is more comportable for her as well. Ever see a giraffe eat grass?? Ha Ha Ebony also wont chew on the stainless so the bowl will last a long time. And by the way she doesnt have any 'rash' on her muzzle. Gotta love a Dane!!
I actually use heavy ceramic dishes as my Dane LOVES to play with both plastic & stainless steel dishes (can't tell you how many times I've had to walk into the backyard in my PJ's to get dishes for breakfast time!). The ceramic dishes are too heavy for him to pick up and they also fit into his raised holder. They are easy to clean, also, as they can go right into the dishwasher.

Don't know if its still done, but in Europe at least the glaze used on ceramincs & pottery sometimes contained lead traces.... might be worth to ensure there's no lead used anymore. Just a thought.
The dane we lost in Sept.(Mahaila)would not drink out of anything but ceramic, toilet her fav. She would eat out of stainless but would go outside to her heavy ceramic bowl. Bought her one for inside and she was fine.

Thanks for the info, Astrid. I purchased the bowls at a pet store, so I would assume they're ok - but you know what happens when you assume :)! I will see if I can find some information about this brand of bowls.

Isn't it funny how dogs, like people, have their little quirks?
Turbo is happy eating/drinking out of anything, but as soon as the stainless steel bowls are empty, he's running around the backyard with them like a fool. He loves to toss them in the air...a riot to watch.
