Hi Everyone!

I have been reading all the questions on what to feed and not to feed your Dane & Dane puppy. I would just like to offer my 2 cents worth.:-)

First, my breeder insisted on it and second,(and most important) this is what Jill Swedlow feeds her Danes. Now... a lot of you know who Jill is, but for those of you who don't, she is one of this country's top Great Dane breeders. She has produced 24 champions in almost 30 years of breeding. I also have one of her many books she has written on Danes. If it's good enough for her dogs, it sure good enough for mine.

Now, I don't know her personally and have never met her, but after reading her books and visiting her web site she seems to have a good diet formula for her Danes. This is her web site:
http://www.sunnysidefarm.com/danefeed.html Check it out!

It even has a link to the Eagle Packs site. On there site you can clip coupons to save $2.00 & $3.00 off there dog food. Now I know some dogs have a problem with loose stools when using eagle pack, therefor you probably shouldn't use it. My pup loves it and she has had no problems with it. I feed her the Natural Formula 23% protein 12%fat.

With Danesonline, Jill Swedlow, my vet, and my breeder, I feel there is not a problem I can't handle with my Dane. This web site is truly fantastic. It offers tons of help to everyone with Danes & all dogs.:D Keep up the GREAT work!

PS No, I don't work for eagle pack.:o

We started feeding our girl Eagle Pack Natural recently and for the first time since we have had her she is eating all of her food. Her stools are a little larger, but much tighter. We think they might be larger because she is actually eating all her food, whereas before she did not. We could not be happier with the results. I have read that the Premium should not be used for long term, but I am not sure if that is accurate or not.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-07-01 AT 05:38AM (PST)[p]Gotta add my cents, might not have two, but I got some.

I have been searching for a GOOD food for Zoey. Started her off on Fromm, then switched to Eagle Pack Premium Select and then to Natural. Now all these were good and fine, but she was eating and pooping way too much. BTW, she is not a picky eater, and will eat anything you give her, which is good. So, I decided to try out the Bil-Jac mix everyone talks about. Zoey, did not like it. She ate it, but would look at me, like what the h@ll is this? AND she began itching everywhere!!! Oh, and wow, did she have the gas!! Yikes, she never did that before. Yes I believe it is a good food, but obviously not for Zoey. I have switched her back to Eagle Pack Premium Select, and she is doing much better. Her stools are smaller and firmer, and she just loves it, which is what really matters. Don't know what was up when she was younger since her stools on this were very loose, but seems to be doing it's job now!! I guess the point is that you have to experiment with foods to find the best one for your pup, and it doesn't matter 'what everyone else feeds'. And don't switch foods too often and you have to do it gradually when you do.

Oh, BTW, Zoey is still a cow, she eats almost eight cups of dry food a day, and she gets carrots, cottage cheese, peanut butter, miscellaneous treats, and some meat with her dinner. Wish I had her metabolism!!

While seriously researching food choices we were deciding between the Premium and Natural. They said Premium Select should only be used for skin problems, and not long term use. They also said something about straight lamb and rice formulas won't hold muscle mass over a long period of time. That steered us clear of the Premium.

Who steered you clear of the Premium??

I first read this in an article Linda Arndt wrote somewhere(maybe she can chime in?.) I then asked the Eagle rep. I was talking to, and they concurred. I am just a novice, especially when it comes to the food issue, and this was just something that kept us away from the Premium Select. You may want to ask the Eagle folks for yourself. Maybe I got it wrong.

Sasman, I am not questioning you, I am just curious as to why they would make a product that you shouldn't be using for a long period of time. Would like to hear if anyone else has heard this??

Do Eagle Reps receive training in nutrition or sales?

Hi all!

Linda emailed me a response and told me to post this message:

Hello Mandi,

Will you post this on Danesonline for me.

I want you to have this information to share.......

Linda

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~
In one of my articles I talked about the "potential" problems with long
termed use of a
straight lamb rice diet.......
A little background first - amino acids come from protein and this makes up
the muscle mass on an animal, among other things. If you look at an amino
acid chart of protein, lamb as at the bottom of the list because it is
lacking in sufficient "essential" amino acids and it requires supplementation
to the diet with amino acids, to bring the food up to par.
When you have a "single" source protein such as lamb, a company will have to
use an amino acid supplementation at the end of the process to ensure there
are adequate amounts of the "essential" amino acids required for proper
health and to meet AAFCO standards.
The better muscle mass on an animal or human, comes with amino acids that are
the results of actual ingredients (multiple meat/egg sources) rather than
supplementation in the vitamin/mineral premix. Therefore, it is my preference
to use a food that has multiple proteins so the nutrients are "ingredient
borne" and therefore more usable by the animal. That is why, unless there is
a specific allergy, the Lamb/Rices diets, regardless of any brand, it should
be used for what are called, an isolation diets.
The Natural pack is the perfect example of a multiple protein food, with
lamb, chicken, fish and eggs in it, meaning there is less supplementation at
the end of the processing of the food and more nutrients come naturally
through the ingredients.
Several years ago, when I was doing feed trials with several local breeders
and on many Danes of different ages, it was evident that a straight Lamb rice
diet used for longer than a year, often produced loss of muscle, particularly
on intact males.
When the Eagle Premium Select Lamb and Rice was developed, I presented this
problem to my friend John Marsman at Eagle, so they made sure when this diet
was developed, they included two sources of protein to prevent muscle loss
over a long period of time and it works.
So....Yes, you can feed the Eagle Premium Select for life, the male I just
finished
has been on it his whole life and he is massive and sound with no problems of
muscle wasting. But I prefer to tell people to save the Premium Select
specifically for digestive problems or allergies, that way people have
something to turn to if their dog has an ultra-sensitive system for whatever
reason.
One other word about lamb/rice diets - these bland diets are just that, bland
in flavor and some dogs grow tired of them because of that, and many dogs
simply do not like
the taste of lamb. This is one reason the Natural Pack works, it is a
multiple protein food, the food of choice by many in this breed and because
of it's many years use.
The Natural Pack as a product is 12 years old, with two years of testing
before it became available to the public. I was one of the breeders involved
in testing this product, along with the Grays (Owlwatch) and several others
across the country.
As a word of interest, the Eagle foods are the only dog foods ever tested on
Great Danes, many Danes and for a long period of time, before they are turned
loose on the public. They are tested on other breeds as well, but it is
unusual for any company to go to all that expense of testing a dog food on
something other than a Beagle.
AAFCO states a feed trial is 6 dogs for 3 weeks, but Eagle tests on many
breeds dogs over a long period of time and for that I have tremendous respect
for the family that owns Eagle.
Hope that helps.
