I am getting my first dane in a week, and the breeder has told me that the puppy has been fed Iams large breed food - so I went out and bought a ton of Iams ADULT large breed food, only to find out that they have actually been fed Iams PUPPY large breed food. I just assumed that it would be ADULT since I read that you should never feed danes any type of 'puppy' food products. Do I need to buy the puppy food or can I switch the puppy to the adult food right away? The canned meat the breeder says has been used is also labeled 'puppy', while I bought the 'adult' kind. What should I do??

Thank you in advance from a new dane owner!

Oh no, absolutely NO puppy food! Thank you so much for asking this question to make sure you do right by your puppy. Puppy food is WAY too high in protein and can cause serious growth problems, because Danes grow so fast. Not sure WHY your breeder would be feeding that? Please just use a good quality, low protein (less than 23%) adult food. Lots of posts in the archives on this, if you need more information.

Thanks,
Michelle

By "large" breed, they are generally talking about dobe's and sheps and other "big" dogs. Danes are GIANT breeds. High protein pup food runs risks like bones fusing as well as muscle problems. The slower they grow, the better.
Also, for the pups digestion, you must slowly make the change by mixing a ratio of the old with the new, gradually increasing untill its all new...
You may want to ask the breeder what their thoughts were as far as the pup food goes...do you trust their opinions? Are they knowlegable?

BTW, Iams adult food is still too high in protein...26%. Depending on your area , Science Large Breed Adult Main. is 21% protein.:+
