Has anyone here ever heard of food bloat? Last week when my 4 month old puppy got off the couch 2 hrs after eating I let him outside. When I let him back in I noticed his stomach looked like there was a basketball inside.I checked his gums but it was hard to tell because they are kinda grey to begin with.I took him to the emergency vet they did a x-ray and said it was food bloat. His stomach was full of food,it looked as though I was looking into his food bowl. Now I know you are all saying to yourselves he's to young for bloat and all the other questions about bloat are running trough your head. Here is how I feed him.I feed Eagle Pack Natural 3 times a day 2 cups per feeding.I put water on his food & stir it well so that all the kibble is wet but I don't let it soak.I basically try to do everything by the book.He didn't get into any extra food and he pooped between lunch and dinner. The vet didn't want to talk about his food she said I needed to talk to my daytime vet and I'm making an appt for next week. Now last night he had the same thing and I gave him GasX and it helped.I was listening to his stomach with the stethoscope and it was gurgling a lot. I'm wondering if it could be a bad bag of food or if he is just becoming food sensitive all the sudden.Any thoughts would be apprecitated. Thank you.

I don't know what our "crop vet" fed my pups, but they both had basketball sized pot bellies after they came out of their surgery with him. They were actually 4 months at the time. It only happened that one time, though.

This forum has a great search engine. Go to the search and type in bloat and you will get directed to all of the information on the subject you could ever want. Many of the reply's on this subject come from breeders with many years of experience. They are wonderful about sharing their knowladge.

Do you think he's drinking too much directly after eating? It sounds like the food might be sitting in his stomach and "soaking" there. Also, that would have me wondering if the food is being "held up" in the stomach (not passing into the small intestines) quick enough. Might be a question for your vet.

Are the bowls elevated? Some people say not elevating bowls can cause too much air to enter the stomach while eating and drinking.

All is going well now. I thought maybe his food was not agreeing with him(Eagle Pack Natural)so I decided to change it to Diamond to see how he did on that. I changed him over very slowly so that I didn't upset his stomach even more. Well as of 2 weeks ago he is strickly on Diamond. His stools changed and got loose but not watery and then last Wed. he had full blown diareha and he was vommiting. Well when I called the vet and told him about the diareha and vommiting he said bring him in right away. I went out side with a zip-loc bag and a teaspoon and got a stool sample. When I took him they saw he had Coccidia. Now the number 1 sign is diareha but because I was changing his food I thought nothing of the soft stool. He is on medication now and doing much better. We will recheck the stool sample in 7-14 days and go from there. We are thinking he was having problems digesting because of the coccidia, we'll have to wait and see. I'm now thinking and researching the BARF diet to see if that might work for us. Thank you for all you thoughts and suggestions they are greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I know that I have posted this in a couple other places but here
I found a web-site on Dietary Risk Factors
(http://www.vet.purdue.edu/epi/dietrisk.htm)
And it suggested that dog foods with fat among the first four ingredients, and dog food with citric acid, that was moistened by the owner before feeding, increase the risk of bloat.
Maybe that is causing the problems, I hope that things work out for you.

Glad to hear that your puppy is on medication. My pup had the same problem and within a couple of weeks after the medication his stool firmed up and he started gaining weight really well. He's now a happy healthy 130 lb 9 month old.
