Below is my experience with Winston. He had all of the symptoms of bloat, which is why I wanted to share my experience, but the gas passed through his system and did not fill in his stomach.

- gender? Male
- age? 2.5 years
- color? fawn
- known medical issues? bicepitial tenosynovities, diarreha
- usual temperament (stressed, calm)? generally calm
- deep chest?
- type of food – raw or kibble (brand name)? Kibble - Eagle Pack at the time
- human food allowed? Only certain items, but never table scraps. Yogurt, fruit, veggies, chicken, hamburger, etc.
- recent diet change? We did not change his diet, however prior to this I strongly believe the formula for Eagle changed when the company was purchased. He did very well on Eagle and then suddenly it didn't agree with him any more as we were sturggling with diarreha.
- feedings per day (one, two, three)? two
- feeding(s) at what time(s) of the day? 6:00 am and 4:30 pm
- fast or slow eater? moderate
- ground or raised feeder? raised
- free access to water? yes
- allowed to exercise/play right after meals? nope, no exercise until at least 1 hour after eating
- if known, did sire/dam/littermates encounter this issue? unknown
- gastropexy - before/after the incident? yes, after the incident
- oncoming warning signs, if any? Vomiting, stretching, restless
- how long after a meal did the incident occur? 8 hours
- time of incident? 2:45
- sequence of events? see below
- vet involvement? He was taken to the emergency vet for Xrays
- outcome? The gas was passing through his intestines. This occured on April 25, 2009. On May 8th he had a consult with a surgeon in Appleton for a prophylactic gastropexy and his surgery was on May 12th. He has been doing well since.
- further comments? This happened on a Saturday. The Thursday prior, Winston was at an event with a lot of people and he always does well (this was not his first event), but that is the only stress I could think of that may have triggered this.

Sequence of Events
After returning for a walk, Winston was standing by the door to go out potty again. I noticed something wasn't right...he looked like he had to throw-up and when this happens he stands by the door to go outside. So I took him out and he threw up his food from the morning (this was at 2:45 in the afternoon). He then threw up bile three more times. He was also stretching a lot - forward and backwards, like he was uncomfortable. And he would get in position to poop, but he would end up just lying down - he did this a couple times. He refused to go in the house and would just lie in the grass. Then he would get up and proceeded to throw-up bile a couple more times. And then he would want to eat grass, stretch, try to poop and just lay down again...he was restless.

I went across the street to our neighbors house, who is a vet, where he proceeded to throw up white foam. He was also a bit agitated when she was looking him over, feeling his stomach, looking at his gums, etc. which is unusal for him because usually he lets you do anything to him. She confirmed what I had been thinking - that he needed to go to the emergency vet.

So I loaded him in the vehicle and we were on our way. In the exam room he threw up again a couple times. His temp was normal and they took him for Xrays. They could only get one view because they couldn't get him to roll over on his back. They said that he had a lot of gas in his intestine. They recommended withholding food and water for 24 hours. (We are withheld food, but gave him water in the morning in small increments). That evening he started a bland diet of rice and hamburger for 3 days.

Overall, it was a very scary experience. From now all I plan to have all my Danes pexied when they get spayed/neutered. I understand that this will not prevent bloat, but if it can potentially give me more time to save my dogs life, it will give me a little peace of mind.
