I decided to feed my baby dane Solid Gold. It was a tough choice between Eagle pack and Solid Gold. I chose SG for two reasons. One, Eagle pack was not readily available in my area, and SG was. Second,I like to add fresh food in my fur kids diet. SG has a kibble specifically for that.

Here is the diet plan for my baby dane:
Morning feed SG puppy blend with cottage cheese or yogurt. I like to add diced apple or bannana to that as well.
Lunch and dinner will be the holistic blend with added fresh meat and veggies.
I supplement all my fur kids with vetri-science canine plus tablets. They can be found at www.healthypets.com

Am I on a good health track here? I am really nervous about the specific nutritional needs of an extra large breed. I don't want to miss anything.

Thanks,

I have researched solid gold before, and the food does seem very good quality. Pricey, but good. I have a few questions for you.
1. What is the fat and protein content of the kibble, as dane puppies need limitted levels.
2. Is there a reason you are adding vitamins to the diet?
3. Lactose based products like yogurt can cause intestinal upset in dogs. Has this been a problem?

Just wondering. I too use some raw foods with my danes in addition to their kibble. Quiet a few disagree with this saying it should be all BARF or all kibble, but to each dog their own. Good luck witht the naming process. :)

Ok, now you have me worried.

The crude fat amount in SG puppy formula (recommended until 6 months of age) is 14 percent. I only want to feed that for breakfast.
The fat content in the Holistic blend is 6 percent and then you add your meat, veggies, and fat. I use grapeseed oil with my home cooking.I want to use this for lunch and dinner. I divide food into three feedings for the puppy stage. My boxers get fed twice a day.

I do not use raw meat. I use raw veggies and cooked meat. I am not opposed to BARF. I consulted with a holistic vet who does not recommend BARF for everyone. The reason she does not recommend BARF is because it is often done incorrectly, and can cause more harm than good. That is her opinion!!! Not mine!!! My holistic vet told me that when done correctly, BARF fed dogs are VERY healthy.
I began home cooking for my boxers to help with their sensitive digestion systems.I prefer cooked food, and that is just merely a personal choice. I give natural yogurt because it aids in digestion. I know many people feed yogurt. I just recently found a web site from a GD breeder who feeds homemade yogurt. I will have to pull up the web page later and post the url. I think everyone will find it informative. She feeds a holistic diet similar to Solid Gold.

I give supplements because, the truth is, dog food is just another form of fast food. I am convinced, like human food, processing food eliminates or alters vitamins. I am just covering all the bases. I use supplements in my own diet. I do not use them to replace nutrition, I use them to aid in health.

I am really nervous about raising this dane. I want to give her the best available nutrition I can. Lets face it nutrition is the foundation to good health. I am often asked about the cost of feeding my fur kids this way, and my response is this...... I spend more on food and less on vet bills. My kid's coats are like velvet and shine like a mirror. I just took my male boxer to the pet store with me yesterday, and I was approached several times in regards to the appearance of his coat.

I keep kibble in all my fur kid's diet for hectic days. It is like days when I run to Mc Donalds for myself.

I also use SG. We feed the regular Adult formula but have tried the Mmilennia. One of the pups did not like it so we will have to stay with the regular. I do swear by SG and I can tell you it has made a world of difference with My Maddie. She had such bad allergies when she was a pup that she still does not have fur on the tip of her tail from chewing it raw.
On the other hand. I know Sissy( the owner of Solid Gold) recommends using the puppy until 6 months and then mixing it. She does own danes but I am not sure this is the best advice. I personally have chosen to ingnore it. I occasionally add things to increase the fat content of the food but the puppy is 28% and that really is WAY too high. You will not stunt the growth of your dog by feeding a lower protein food. They will be big enough as it is and why take the risk?

It sounds like whatever you dicide to do with the food your dogs will always get a extra helping of love :* . I use Bil-Jac Senior and Select mixed 50-50 , and every night I add something such as fruit, garlic, cottage cheese or a little peanut butter. Just remember opinions on food are like danes, everyone should have one !!!
