View Full Version : Vitamin C dosing
I just finished up a class in air pollution and one of the things we studied was oxidants/antioxidant reactions. Mentioned during the lecture was the fact that vitamin C when given in megadoses can revert back into an oxidant. Also mentioned was the fact that canines can manufactor their own vitamin C from simple glucose. Now I realize in danes vitamin C is probably being given for growth issues associated with extremely rapid bone and elastin formation rather than free radical elimination, but I started wondering could vitamin C have detrimental effects on danes if the danes were not supplimented at the same time with vitamin E?
Just a thought. Any ideas, Dr. Gus?

Dogs do manufacture some vitamin C on their own but not enough to get them thru the stress periods of growth or when they are sick etc. That is why we supplement with it. I have backed off on the mega doses that I used to use and only give 1,000 mg per day.

Is the vitamin E supplementation recommended with vitamin C for dogs? I had thought that it was a supplement to be given along with fatty acids - the omegas, fish oil, etc.

You are correct. You don't need to give Vitamin E with C. You give it with oils always.

Thanks. I always have trouble with that one!

Ah! I see. My thanks to the good doctor also.

It is my understanding that vit C acts outside the cells and the fat soluable vitamin like E and A inside the cells. Are their transport mechanisms in cell membranes that allow the absorption of vit. C?
I also am under the impression that vit E can absorb some of the electrons that megadoses of vit c. give off when it reverts back to an oxidant form.
Why must vit E be given in oils? Can gel-caps be given? Can they be given at the same time?

Vitamin e keeps the oils from going rancid in the body. I give them at the same time.
