I don't know where I saw this exactly (somewhere on the web), but I thought that I would give out the helpful tip!!! Raised food dishes are important for the dane but are usually pretty costly ($60-200). Using tall (22" or so) plant stands that you can fit a nice stainless steel bowl in is usually a lot cheaper (stands ~$15 each, Home Depot; bowls ~$5 each at Walmart). I also think that they look a lot more artistic!!! I have a mixture of wrought iron and stainless. They work great! =o)

Yes, that's a good alternative.
But - $60-200 for a raised food dish??? Whereever did you look? Foster & Smith for example have them at $33 each.

We feed ours in a kitchen chair. Water bowl stays on the baker's rack but he has already decided he perfers the toilet. x(

Thats funny about the toilet!!! The $33 is good too! I just looked at local pet stores(maybe the S.F. bay area is more expensive) and then I did some searches on the web. I just couldn't seem to find much that was inexpensive!

Amy, I learned an expensive lesson about dogs drinking out of toilet bowls. I was dog-sitting a friend's Mastiff while she was at a show. My friend warned me that she cannot get this dog to stop drinking out of the toilet bowls. Well, NOT at my house, NO dog drinks out of the toilets here! I should have known that my friend had tried all of the obvious tactics to change her dog's behavior already...
When leaving for the store, I just closed the toilet lids and bathroom doors. There was plenty of fresh water everywhere within the house.
Upon arriving back home, I opened the door, stepped into an inch of water on the floors and almost fainted at seeing the "explosion" of the bathroom door. The Mastiff had clawed its way THROUGH the bathroom door and threw the brass/oak toilet seat and lid back with such force that it had shattered the toilet tank!! Water was running continuously onto the floor since I had left.
Well, at least this Mastiff was now fully hydrated and seemed to develop a new appreciation of water sports.

My 12-week-old Dane just discovered the toilet bowl. He peeked in, took a drink, and looked at me as if to say, "This was here the whole time?"

I bought a childrens wooden toy chest at Target for $19.00 and it works great. I was going to saw out holes but the bowls actually stay in place and it makes a great storage area for all of the doggie gear! The girls were especially excited watching me put it together and getting to eat off the final product. I've also used Rubbermade containers and plant stands. I bought an old piano bench and took the cover off for my parents Danes Doggie Table. There are a lot of creative things you can do to make a suitable Dane feeding bowl.:7

You know those pop corn tins at Christmas that everyone who don't know what to get you and wants to get you something give. Well I take off the lid and the food and water bowl sit great in them and now that they have them at valentines day and holloween I can decorate for the season. I also buy those kitchen door mats from walmart here they are $2.50 and they come in seasonal as well. I put the tin cans on there to catch the mess. I also wind my Christmas tree lites in them and they go from the tree in the can and come out and go back on the tree so easy, saves time and no knots, just put the lid on and store with the rest of the decorations. jean in MI

Here's another idea that worked well for me. When raising a puppy feed them at a stair case when they are small their bowl is on the first step and as they grow you can move the bowl up a step. When they are fully grown you can get a more permanent stand, or like we do, feed them in their crates from bowls elevated and mounted on the crate itself, at just the right height for each dog.

Oni,
LOL -That story is hysterical! What did your friend say when you told her what happened?

Jatank,of course she offered to pay for everything but it really was my own doing. So she brought over a really good bottle of wine and we giggled non-stop while we watched Joey fix everything. Dog people just make some of the BEST friends!

Boy...all you guys seem to have such pretty feeding areas...while mine is one of those big, ugly rubbermaid storage containers. We just empty the dog food out of the bag and into the container to keep it fresh, and Zeus' food and water bowl are on top of that. It is the perfect height, but not the most visually appealing feeding station ever. I think I might try the plant stands, though...that seems to be something that could make my kitchen look prettier. Hhhmmmm...yes, pretty delicate plant stands as opposed to clunky green rubber container. Gee I gotta get to Lowes or Home Depot! Thanks for the suggestion!

Well now you can always get artsy and paint stuff on your Rubbermaid...dog bones, collars, drool }>

Oops! Need to edit! I forgot the drool is probably already there! :D

Oh yes, Tess....the drool is there in abundance! But I like your idea of painting things on it. I have to admit that I am not much good at drawing, so I'd have to get stencils and paint everything in. Thanks for the idea!
