Well guys...it was an experience and definitely one to learn and grow by.

Soon after we arrived we met up with the 2 classmates and set up as a group. We laughed at ourselves because you could tell we were the only "newbies" that day. We were the ONLY ones that set up without a rug or large mat. So, if you go to a horse stable bring a makeshift floor because your sh*t WILL get dirty!! LOL!

A little while later I took Dakota for a potty walk and she had pudding-poo. She was experiencing slight anxiety. She was panting and her eyes had that big-as-a-pieplate look (you know the look?) I rubbed some rescue remedy on her gums then I put some under my tongue too!! LOL! Then we took regular walks around to acclimate, we did basic on lead commands with treat rewards, went to the warm-up area which had a jump and set of weaves. She would hardly weave in the warm-up area and when she did it was R E A L L Y S L O W .

First run: Regular agility course. (Sat)
We got off to what looked and felt like a good start. At the approach to the dogwalk she decided not to take it and ran passed. I could not get her back so I quickly decided to take the refusal and continue. I got her attention back and signaled to a tunnel. She shot through that then hell-bent zoomies took over! Then she would sniff...then zoom...ignoring recalls...then she went to run out! When she tried to run out both ring exits were blocked with side-by-side human bodies just to keep her in! All these people that I did not know tried to help us succeed and blocked 2 10' sections. I almost cried!! Well anyway, I got Dakota back for a few more obstacles and then she lost it again and then I heard the judge say "thank you". (for those who do not know, "thank you" from a judge really means "please leave". lol!) That's okay because she should have said that long before so she did us a favor! Result: E (elimination)

Second Run: Jumpers: (Sat)
At the start she was in a sit-stay and JUST as the words from my mouth came out to begin she turned her head and saw the DP. Well you know when she heard the release word she darted in the direction of where her head was pointed! BUMMER! Immediately she ran out of the ring! The judge and I knew that was instant elimination but she didn't say "thank you" yet so I tried to get her back in the ring for experience but it was "Danes Gone Wild"! I clapped my hands, I ran, I squealed "come puppy", I calmly said "here!", "come". We did 1 jump, 1 tunnel, 1 jump. Then I heard "thank you". Result: E (elimination)

After a good night's rest, yes, you cannot get rid of us!! (do you hear the Rocky music???)

On Sunday when we arrived and set up many smiled and said "Hey, your back!" I smiled and said "Yes we are!" (btw, all smiles were genuine:)) Many mentored us for the third run and I decided to take advice. The advice was to pick a few obstacles out of the whole course that I felt was certain success and end with that...just be sure to tell the judge first.

Third Run: Tunnelers: (Sun)
I was excited with this new idea for success and was daydreaming and MISSED THE DARNED WALK-THROUGH!! I had no idea what the course looked like! Plus, that was when I was supposed to talk to the judge! I ran to the post board to look at the "Tunnelers map" and quickly figured things out. I was determined to get Dakota to that finish line! I got in line and they called our name. We walked into the ring. I didn't cue up to the start but I looked across to the judge and pointed towards the middle of no where. She nodded yes and we ran to our starting tunnel. Dakota's tail was wagging and she seemed happy!!:D I avoided all twisting and sharp turns! I put her in a sit stay. I released her to go...Dakota barrels through the first tunnel...I meet her at the other end and motion her to the second...bam baby, she's in there!!! Then I yell "Go, go tunnel!" Yes! She's in the third and then crosses the finish line!!!! Everybody claps!! I'm laughing and laughing! Dakota so happy from the positive energy she gets the zoomies and I can't catch her! Everybody laughing (in a good way) and after like 2 more minutes I motioned her into one of the tunnels and caught her at the end of it! Result: E (elimination)

Things I have learned:

My handling skills are aweful. Okay, maybe not aweful but they are not very good. I felt like a deer in the headlights when things went amuck.

I am not interesting enough for Dakota to want to come back to me. I need to find the key.

I loved, loved, loved all of those wonderful people!

though not the experience you wanted, you had a ton of backbone to get back in there and keep trying.

I'm proud of you.

I am so proud of you and Dakota returning the second day. It can be really hard when everyone has "perfect" dogs such as border collies, aussies, and goldens. You will learn how to refine your handling skills with each trial. (I promise this!)

Regarding the attention; if Dakota is dog friendly and you have your own jumps, tunnels, etc, I would go to a dog park and practice jumping around a lot of other distractions.

From my own experience in Rally, if I do not have my Dakota's attention after the jump, then it is very hard to get focus. At my Rally Trial back in June, Dakota ran zoomies around the ring) This is tricky because the dogs needs to be watching the jump (Tunnel, Dog Walk, etc) and not focused on your face, otherwise they will miss the jump. It is critcal to give the command and then call them back immediately. My example, is I say over. and right as Dakota is over the jump, I say heel or here.

I take my jumps to a local parking lot or park and we practice jumps with people and distractions around.

Good Luck in the future and before long you will be gettings Qs. yay

June, I'm glad that you had an overall positive (albeit a bit stressful) experience! I'm sure it'll get easier as time goes on. Good work and it's so awesome that you kept at it!

Thanks Libs! Thank you for sharing your experience and your suggestion. I've been trying to think of new ways to add and change up training methods/routines! This will help!:)

June......your description of Saturday and Sunday's events made me feel like I was right there!!!!! I could almost feel your frustration as I was reading........but I also felt your great sense of humor and your determination......good for you going back on Sunday. Even though Dakota got eliminated, think of the experience you both gained from her very first competition of this type. What impressed me most was the fact that the people were sooooooooo GREAT!! That alone makes you want to go back and try it again!! :)

I love that you have a great sense of humor! Despite the scores, I think you should be proud!
I used to show horses, and can totally relate to how thoroughly animals can humiliate us LOL! As a kid I used to have to "fix" problem ponies - not the best thing for the ego, but made me a much better rider ;)
Can't wait to hear how Dakota's next competition goes - bring the videocamera next time!

Dakota should have gotten a ribbon for "best zoomies on the course." Your description was so real, gave me great visuals and made me chuckle while feeling your frustration. I admire that you kept trying! Way to go!

Great job yayyay

There is a reason why everyone know what that "Thank You" from the judge means, it happens all the time.

I cant wait for your next thread when you tell us how proud you are of her completing her first course ThumbupThumbup

I'm sorry things didn't go as smoothly as hoped.

However, I'm sure Dakota made more people smile and enjoy themselves than any other dog competing. That in itself is a blue ribbon.

So my trainer (we are doing Rally) told us a story today when she had gone to a show with her golden Brody. They had already titled in Level 1 (where it's done on leash) and went to their first Level 2 show where it's done off leash. At the start line everything was fine until they started to do the course - Brody decided it was time to zoom and she just sat there at the start, called him (he came after a bit, lol) and looked at the judge and said "I think we're done!" So I hope that makes you feel a little better that even those who have been doing it for some time have crazy days! I wish you luck on your next show!

The main thing is, you had fun. I know you did, I could tell by your accounting of what happened. You will both be great in time. Don't give up. Practice makes perfect!! dance2

What a wonderful story you tell. I am glad you had fun with Dakota and persevered in your efforts. But, most of all, I am glad you wrote about it. I was so "right there" with your descriptions! You must keep a journal of your progress with Dakota and keep us posted. THEN, collect up all the posts and publish your story!!

LOL! I have to say that DOL'ers already gave us the "Zoomie Award" last February when I posted our graduation night video from Beginners. You'll have to check it out! Dakota was HAPPY during the whole course time.

ETA: I just went back to the video thread. haha! You DID see it!!

Hi june everything worth while takes time.:)You keep at it girl oh and did i ever tell you i love love dakota!!She always puts a big smile on my face cannot wait for more stories.

Thanks Cheryl! You always lift my spirits!! OH, and don't you worry, there's always a story in this house!! haha!

Thanks Ann! I was so so tired but I wanted to summarize while still fresh in my heart. Believe me, if you were to watch in "real time" it was so agonizing and dreadfully long!!

What I did not mention was for the 2 courses on Sat we were there for 11 hours! Our first run was approx 2 hours after we got there and we packed up and left after her second. I was so worried about her anxiety and she was borderline "shutdown". It was very hard to try to keep her as upbeat as possible. Her degree of anxiety on Saturday was enough to keep her from her normal bliss! On Sunday in order for us to have a chance I didn't arrive until mid day. That gave us both time to get a lot of sleep and rest. Sunday her zoomies were FUN for her, and of course her success with the partial course!

Haha! I always try to find the humorous side of life! It's also convenient to hide behind humor also. So when I get nervous I try to hop on the funny bus immediately! If I don't there is a chance I will cry and that won't be pretty cause it's the "ugly cry"! haha! You gals know the "ugly cry", right?

I am very optimistic! Since I noticed a lower level of anxiety on Sunday I believe that with time and experience she and I will get better and better outside of classroom. There is another agility event in November so I hope I can register for this too!!

Oh, boy, have we been there!

Sadie's first-ever competition run she was over 11 of 12 jumps perfectly (I was shocked!) Then she knocked the last bar. The real problem? She knocked the final bar with her explosive poo! OMG!

And I know how awful it is when your "safe" plan B even falls though. In my case it literally fell through! We were having an awful weekend and my plan was to set up for jumpers, do ONE jump, then leave the ring and get a hamburger. As I was setting up a woman stumbled and fell through the ring gate behind us! Sadie was too freaked to even take the first jump!

It gets easier as you get more experience. More importantly, even if you don't get better the embarassment gets to be easier to handle! :-)

quite the weekend but glad to hear you stuck with it!! Us agility dane people with issues need to stick together (see my post in this section...). Keep up the hard work and it will pay off, at least Dakota loves what she's doing!
