I am going to try and mix up Zolton's training treats for obedience class.
I found that last week leftover roast cut into small pieces really got his attention.....so this week I thought I would add chicken weiners to the mix.
My question is how do I go about drying them out??? Microwave them or is raw chicken weiners cut up ok?
Thanks

Dehydration in the oven is always a possibility... or if you have a dehydrator that works too. I got a dehydrator to make my own treats for my pup and it's paid for itself since I got it.

You can microwave them to death. They turn into little jerky like things.

AWESOME idea-using the dehydrator for dog treats. There shouldn't be a problem giving a non RAW dog small dehyrated rost pieces should there? Should I cook then dehydrate - or dehydrate straight from raw?? TY

If you're just using as training treats you would be fine using them as is without dehydrating. We'll use hot dogs, cheese sticks, whatever REALLY gets your dogs attention. We'll just cut them up into very small pieces :D
You just want to avoid feeding an entire kibble meal mixed with raw. If you're just treating or training there shouldn't be any issue.

Great to know. Thanks. Heidi will be so happy and I think it will help distinguish between training time and "regular" treat time like getting in her bed for nightime etc.

I just recently used my food dehydrator to make little treats of cubed eye of round and cubed liver. Krypt loves them. The liver is kinda creepy and waxy looking though, but she doesnt mind.

OK. Maybe i will try dehydrating the meat then giving it to her. I gave Heidi about 1/2 a buffalo burger patti (it was already cook- not sure if that made a difference) while we were at the dog park and working on some training. Either I shouldn't have done it cause she had been running around or it just didn't agree with her tummy cause she threw up a little on the way home.
Have any of you ever used Buffalo meat for treats? If so, did you give it raw or cooked and is your dogs diet normaly kibble or raw?

I bought two huge rolls of smoked (no spices or additives, just smoked) pig skin from the butcher for $1. I cut it up into tiny squares and used them as training treats. I froze the majority and just put some into the fridge to keep as needed for training purposes. Scarlett would sell her soul for that stuff! Gotta get some more soon. $1 worth of that stuff lasted about four months. Smells like bacon!

If you are using the treats for training I would suggest drying them out in the oven or microwave. Either one works. While there would be no harm feeding them raw, the amount of time you would be carrying them around would allow bacteria to grow exponentially if you are using them for classes. You would then have it all over your fingers and touching lots of things. Raw chicken is not something you want to go around with on your hands for any amount of time.
