Hello to all, what a great place to read, learn and enjoy.

I bought the best dog on earth last April, a black male Great Dane named Bruiser. Just wanted to let you all know that I have been comming to this forum time and time again over the last 5 months. I finally registered tonight so this is my first post. I have been visiting thru-out the "ear cropping", "potty training", "behavioral" and "nutritional" times of my pups life.

I know have an awesome, healthy, 8 month old black Great Dane!

Bruiser is 118lbs, 32", eating Innova natural kibble, raw chicken necks & fresh carrots/veggies. I have learned more about my boys nutritional needs here than at any Vets office. My dog shines like a mirror, both physically and mentally.

Thanks to all for a very great place!

Thanks for all the hello's.
We figured that was an appropriate name for him on account of all the bruises he was dishing out while zooming around the house. Also, that huge paw in the chest, and that massive head being dropped on your lap while your watching TV, isn't it great! I'll try imagestation tonight, if I get pics up I'll post back here.

Speaking of the zoomies, Bruiser runs full speed across the yard and into the woods. Has anyone had, or heard about any injuries because of this? I'm worried he's going to hit a tree and break his neck! During rainy weather he has slid into the fence, our house, and one time straight across the lawn, for 15 feet. What do you all do when your pup starts sprinting like a race horse? Have any of you been run into?

Well, he could hurt himself. There have been a few sad stories that I can think of; one in which a female Dane playing with a larger dog broke her neck. Another dog that was playing in the house, and fell and banged his head and died. They are SO big and fast, that yes it's possible he could run into the woods, slip on leaves, and pile into a tree. It would be very sad indeed.

Personally my Dane has never been much of a zoomer, and has never been allowed to do it in the house. We have four fenced acres, so there is plenty of room outdoors. I taught her "BRAKES!!!!" when I'm out with her, because she would probably kill me if she ran over me. After she blew my knee out last year, I have to be very careful. :-)

Thanks for chiming in, never thought of teaching a "brakes" command. I have been working with him since I read your reply, he seems to be catching on.

Take it easy,
Jeff

Quite a few years ago, I read somewhere that every dog in America thinks that their name is "no". Also, it's been suggested here that some dogs ignore the word - guess like with kids, they can't hear it. :D

We use other words like Off, Out, Ack - she seems to respond well to those. I guess brakes was one I blurted out one day while she was barreling down at me full speed. Also I put my hand out like police do when they are directing traffic at an intersection.

Do keep visiting DOL - Bruiser sounds like a lucky dog.

Glad to see you join up, Jeff & Bruiser! He sounds like a magnificent young guy! We feed Innova too, but Emma isn't too interested in raw, unfortunately. Working on it, however.

Welcome :o

Hello Jeff!
I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of your Dane. For about 33 years I had fawns and brindles, then in 2001 I got a black male while living in the Netherlands. To me he's drop dead gorgeous! Mickey is now nearly 2 1/2, and I also have two male harlequins - Spirit, American, 13 months, and Shrek, Dutch, 6 1/2 months. I have found that one Dane is not enough - he/she wants to play with you! Two is wonderful!! They can cut loose and really play, then they come inside and take long naps. Having three young males in the house is very painful for my husband and I. What was I thinking? Our GDRI's (Great Dane Related Injuries) have increased ten-fold! Anyway, when the youngest is two, we'll be home free.

you can see Mickey, Spirit, and Shrek at
