Once every week or two, we go and get Castiel's meat. Partner stands in the kitchen and packs it all into meals and then it goes in the freezer. All packaging goes into a grocery bag to be thrown down the garbage chute immediately thereafter.
Cas likes to steal the bag of packaging.

He doesn't shred it. He doesn't lick it. He doesn't do anything to it.

He just sticks his nose in and, loudly, INHALES. Over and over again. He huffs meat juice.
Weird dog.

We have mini dachshunds and have been feeding prey model raw for 3 years. It's easy peezy, have it down pat... Love it, no issues... fantastic and all that.

I have only ever had mini dachshunds - same with hubby. Long story short, we're now getting a Great Dane.

She's about 125 lbs, 33" tall, 19 month old fawn female. She's a show girl - has been pointed and such - but is too laid back and calm for the ring (which works GREAT for us!)

She's being spayed next Wednesday and we'll be getting her around June 1st.

So I've never fed a dog this big before!

Going to start with whole chickens - probably 1% to transition her. A week in we'll move to turkey necks. Then on to pork, then beef, then organ.

To help avoid bloat (which terrifies me!) we're going to be feeding two meals per day and let her rest an hour after meals.

Am I missing something? I'm the raw feeder in the family so this will be my job.

Thanks everyone!

Today we are officially one week away from our Ludo coming home! yay

I placed my first order from the supplier. I kept it rather simple since they are local and I can order frequently. I ended up with some green tripe(even though I said I wasn't going to I want what's best for my dog), case of chicken backs, liver and some chunk chicken. I ordered a lot of the chicken backs, liver and tripe as to last at least a month and about 2 weeks worth of chicken meat as his first protein.

Is this sufficient for a first order for an 8 week old pup? Should I consider adding anything else? My next order(in about a week and a half) I plan on introducing another protein, perhaps beef and I'm definitely going to get chicken necks and some of their dried organs for treats.

Once I get the hang of this, it's my intention to order monthly, but for now I'm prepared to place orders weekly if need be. Thanks in advance for any input! :)

So far so good!yay

No red itchy rash....keeping an eye on her for the next day or two to see if the poop stays good.

If so, we are going to give raw a try. Looking into getting a deep freezer right now.

I am reading Dr Pitcairn's newest edition of canine nutrition and he mentions that you have to use bone meal sourced outside of the US due to the high levels of lead in beef bones, here in the US.

Is anyone concerned with feeding beef RMB (I realize most beef bones are more of a recreational bone, not a lot of it is ingested) due to the amount of lead?

So, after spending WAY to much this month on kibble, and multiple switches due to first TOTW recall, then Natural Balance recall.... I am 85% of the way to trying RAW

My one hang up is Luna is allergic to chicken (rash, hives, liquid poo)

I have had many people tell me that even if she can't have cooked chicken, she might be fine with raw chicken.

But....why? Is there any research out there that says so? Any chemisty majors out there that can explain how coooking can change the protein? Anything other than anecdotal evidence?

Its not that I don't trust people, but I want to be pretty sure she will be safe before I give this a try.

Ok, so I'm thinking about going RAW once I get settled into the new place...we'll see :) For some reason it makes me nervous, I KNOW I'm way over thinking it. Anyways, I was going to run by a butcher this week to get some yummy treats for the boys (marrow bones) to see what they think about it all and I figured while I was there I could chat them up about prices, deals, etc. Are there any particular questions I should be asking them??? I am meat STUPID...seriously, I eat boneless chicken breast and ground turkey, but that's about it. I made my first pot roast this winter and bought the piece of meat in the grocery store that had a sticker that said "great for pot roast", lmao. I only eat steaks at restaurants because I have no idea how to pick one out or really cook it well. rolleyes

So, any advice on good things to ask the butcher, what I should be looking for to make sure it's quality, etc??

TIA for any help. I get so overwhelmed going through all the RAW stuff because I over think. Thanks everyone!!

Zane hasn't been wanting to eat much the last few days. He had a turkey wing yesterday and maybe ate 1/5 of it. I picked it up, tried to feed him again last night and he turned his nose up. I Gabe him a chicken leg quarter this morning and he didn't touch it. He's acting totally fine. He's running around playing. He is his normal hyper self. He keeps sniffing at the extra bag of dog food we have to feed the fish. Do dogs get tired of raw? Surely not. Right? He is pooping fine. Not hard, not soft. He must be eating enough if he is pooping still. I'm going to take him in if he doesn't eat this evening. Any clues??

Sooo, this weekend, we finally got to start our RAW feeding. We are feeding chicken leg quarters, takingmost of the skin off but leaving a little skin/fat on.

He has adjusted reallly well already. We aren't even experiencing runny DPoop
It is a little loose but not runny. He knew exactly what to do. The first time he just licked it for a minute but then he figured it out and went to town. With kibble, he never finished his bowl in one sitting. It was hard to gauge that he was getting all the food he needed. He KNOWS meal time is the best time of the day now. He eats all of it in just a matter of about 7 minutes. dance2 I am so excited that we have "seen the light" so to speak and have taken everyone's great advice on DOL!!

One question, when should i start adding in a little liver?

After many tears, much reading and phone calls to my vet and breeder. We have come to the conclusion it isn't about Raw, home cooking or kibble, it's about establishing healthy eating.
Before I got Bella she was eating kibble with a handful of meat mixed in and she ate it well, 7 cups of kibble a day ( broken into two meals ). When I got her I ruined her. I bought necks for treats, gave liver and chicken treats. I wanted to spoil her and make her feel loved and happy here, probably because she was 5mths so older, I just thought spoiling her would help her adjust better.
Well I messed up hugely.
On advice from breeder and vet, at this stage Bella will be offered nothing but kibble, no treats, no anything until she learns to eat what's put in front of her.
I can't be because she doesn't like her food, she ate it perfectly until I stuffed up, she's just holding out for the good stuff, so no more good stuff.
So back to basics we go.
Thank you everyone and I'm sorry for my frantic emotional state. Hope u all don't judge me on that and get to really know me.
